During this session, the participants will learn about the Basic International Human Rights Legislative (IHRL) definitions of protections against gender-based violence. The facilitators will also share how gender-based violence survivors can have a role as human rights defenders. Lastly, while learning about how protection against GBV an internationally protected human right is, participants will reflect on and define their role as human rights defenders.

During this session, the participants will learn the social determinants of safety, focusing on migrant women. Using a gendered lens, the presenters will define the who/what/when/how of migration using a gendered lens. This second session will help us determine how the social determinants of safety help you frame your approach.

This third and last session of our series will focus on the trauma-informed and intersectional approaches to disclosures and responses in a gender-based violence context. This session will also be based on the participants’ needs and learning goals. The facilitators will connect with participants during sessions one and two to get a better sense of trauma-informed needs from the group. Activities such as practice responses and quizzes will take place.

Amanda Dale is best known for her decade as the Executive Director of the Barbra Schlifer Clinic, and previously as the Director of Advocacy and Communications at YWCA Toronto. She is currently faculty at the Women’s Human Rights Institute, and a recognized spokesperson and expert in the way law impacts marginalized people’s lives and in women’s rights and violence against women. Amanda has remained active in the feminist movement for three decades, contributing to many organizations, including Quimaavik Shelter, Nellie’s Hostel, St. Joseph’s Women Health Centre, and YWCA Toronto, Women’s Shelters Canada, the Canadian Coalition for Gun Control.

Deepa Mattoo is a people strategist and inclusion-focused professional who has a breadth of experience in the not-for-profit sector, and she is Executive Director at the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic. Before joining the Schlifer Clinic, Deepa was Project Co-ordinator, Staff Lawyer, and Executive Director at the South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario. Deepa was the Law Foundation of Ontario’s Community Leadership in Justice Fellow at Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto. She has trained thousands of service providers for best practices and legal education to work with forced marriage survivors, racialized non-status women, and immigration law clients in the context of gender-based violence.

Investigation has found higher rates of Traumatic Brain Injury (approximately 75%) in survivors of Intimate Partner Violence, leaving women survivors vulnerable to increased rates of repeat violence, permanent disability, criminal justice system engagement, unemployment, homelessness, poverty, and mental health. The Acquired Brain Injury Research Lab developed The Abused & Brain Injured Toolkit to help frontline workers address this gap. The webinar provides key information on TBI in women exposed to intimate partner violence and introduces participants to the Toolkit.

24% of women in Canada live with one or more disability. Yet these realities are often erased, and the anti-ableist movement is de-gendered. In this webinar, presenters will tackle the precarious situation particular to women and girls living with one or more disabilities. They will provide guidance in the different ways attendees can prepare themselves when offering services to women with disability. They will share testimonials and statistics on women and girls with disabilities in order to better inform service providers, and normalize awareness on the topic in theory and in action.

On this webinar, Dr. Julien Poon and Dr. Peter Jaffe talk about the Canadian Domestic Homicide Prevention Initiative with Vulnerable Populations. This 7-year national project focuses on enhancing and informing domestic violence risk assessment, risk management, and safety planning strategies to decrease the risk of lethality for vulnerable populations, specifically Indigenous populations; rural, remote and northern communities; immigrants and refugees; and children exposed to domestic violence.
