YWCA Canada has authored a new report about online hate in Canada, which centers on the voices, lived experiences, and strategies shared by young women and gender-diverse youth aged 16-30 years. YWCA Canada also commissioned national polling data about individual and collective experiences of online hate across Canada.  The report and polling data are part of YWCA Canada’s efforts to develop community-generated, survivor-centric solutions to curb the circulation of digital hate and mitigate its harms. Emerging from community-based dialogue and data collection, the recommendations included in this report provide ethical guidelines and equitable benchmarks for systems-level changes to ensure online safety.

This project engages in innovative community-based participatory research, develops intersectoral partnerships, and builds capacity for youth and organizations in Canada to address online hate. This new research will help empower young Canadians to speak out against online hate and create systems-level changes to create safer digital spaces. The report and polling data are released as part of Block Hate: Building Resilience against Online Hate Speech, a four-year research and knowledge mobilization project funded by Public Safety Canada’s Community Resilience Fund. The objective of this project is to build digital resilience that includes individual and community resilience to systems-level resilience that incorporates re-imagining and regulating the design, governance, and content moderation practices of online platforms.
