Two key gathering spaces within the YWCA Federation for supporting the leadership of Indigenous Peoples in our movement and advancing our commitments to Truth and Reconciliation are the Indigenous Circle and the Truth and Reconciliation Action Committee.
Led by our National Director of Indigenous Relations, Reconciliation and Equity, the Indigenous Circle is a space for Indigenous staff and Board volunteers in the YWCA movement. In September 2023, the Indigenous Circle attended a working retreat in the beautiful territory of the traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nationsnow known as Vancouver, BC.
Constituted in 2016, the Truth, Reconciliation and Action Committee has as its mandate to inspire change, provide oversight, motivation, and leadership, to guide and ensure the implementation of Truth and Reconciliation at YWCA Canada. Through our national Truth and Reconciliation Action Committee, YWCA will continue to implement practical ways to support the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Calls for Justice, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action and supporting and implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
