As Wildfires and the Climate Crisis Devastate Communities, We Stand with Those Most Affected

Published on 24/06/2026 by YWCA Canada

There are currently more than 850 wildfires burning across Canada, with some recently destroying entire First Nations communities.

The impacts of these fires and the climate crisis are not experienced equally. Indigenous Peoples, who make up less than 5% of Canada’s population, are among the first to face the devastating consequences of the climate crisis. Women and girls are disproportionately impacted during disasters, often carrying increased caregiving responsibilities while facing risks to their safety, health, and economic wellbeing. Children and young people are also being forced to leave their homes, schools, and communities while navigating the trauma of displacement.

We are devastated to witness the destruction of people’s homelands, the loss of community spaces, and the displacement of entire families. As communities face evacuation, uncertainty, and profound loss, we hold them in our thoughts and stand in solidarity with all those affected. We are also thinking of frontline responders and local YWCAs across Canada that have been or continue to be impacted by these fires.

As the climate crisis intensifies and Canada continues to warm at nearly twice the global rate, these increasingly severe wildfire seasons remind us of the urgent need for climate action rooted in reconciliation. These realities are compounded by longstanding systemic inequities, policy decisions, and funding shortfalls that continue to reflect the ongoing legacy of colonialism.

We are grateful for the leadership of First Nations working tirelessly to protect their people, lands, and futures. We join Indigenous community leaders in calling for immediate, coordinated emergency action to support First Nations people. Everyone deserves access to timely support, safe evacuation, and the resources needed to protect their wellbeing. The safety and dignity of affected communities must remain the highest priority.
