Coalition of Canada’s 6 largest charities including YWCA Canada calling for Community Services COVID-19 Relief Fund

On Saturday, January 23rd, 2021, a coalition of Canada’s largest human and community service federations, including YWCA Canada, participated in a Roundtable with the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Canada’s Minister of Families, Children and Social Development.

To address the COVID-19 pandemic and ensure the sustainability of the charitable and non-profit sector, YWCA Canada is calling for a Community Services COVID-19 Relief Fund.  They are joining in coalition with YMCA Canada, United Way Centraide Canada, National Association of Friendship Centres, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada.

YWCA Canada’s CEO Maya Roy participated in the roundtable alongside:

  • Peter Dinsdale, President and CEO of YMCA Canada
  • Dan Clement, President and CEO of United Way Centraide Canada
  • Jocelyn Formsma, Executive Director of National Association of Friendship Centres
  • Owen Charters, President & CEO of Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada
  • Matthew Chater, National President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada

The Roundtable also featured local representatives such as:

  • Utcha Sawyer, Executive Director, Boys and Girls Club of East Scarborough
  • Medhat Mahdy, President and CEO of YMCA of Greater Toronto
  • Nation Cheong, Vice President, Community Opportunities & Mobilization, United Way Greater Toronto

As members of civil society, we look forward to working alongside the Government of Canada to provide essential services to communities in need. Targeted bridge funding for our sector will not only enable the sustainability of vital community supports but ensure our recovery from this pandemic is equitable and works for everyone.
