YWCA Canada stands in solidarity with the community of Hollow Water First Nation and all those affected by the recent mass stabbing that has devastated the community and taken precious lives. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those impacted, and to all community members grieving this loss.
We echo the words of National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak, who called for “action to ensure safety and security for First Nations citizens, for community-based, compassionate approaches that respond to our unique needs.”
We also recognize the gendered dimensions of this crisis. Indigenous women, girls and gender diverse people are disproportionately affected by violence. Ensuring real safety means investing in Indigenous-led, trauma-informed, culturally grounded approaches that prioritize healing, justice, and self-determination.
We will continue to advocate alongside Indigenous communities and leaders for investments in infrastructure, mental health and community supports in Indigenous communities—foundational components of the structural change that is urgently needed.
We also acknowledge and stand with our three YWCAs in Manitoba, YMCA-YWCA Winnipeg, YWCA Thompson, and YWCA Westman, who continue to serve their communities with care and compassion during this difficult time.
In solidarity,
YWCA Canada
