YWCA Canada stands with survivors now and always. We are deeply aware of the pain that moments like Thursday’s verdict can bring for survivors of sexual violence and their communities.
We know that the criminal legal system often fails to deliver justice for survivors and that a “not guilty” verdict does not mean harm did not occur. The burden of proof in these cases is extremely high, and the process can be retraumatizing for those who come forward.
We thank E.M. for her remarkable courage, which is helping to bring awareness to issues within hockey culture and contributing to meaningful systemic change.
To E.M and all survivors, we see you, we believe you, and we will continue to fight for a safer, more just and equitable future for women, girls and gender diverse people.
Ending gender-based violence requires urgent and sustained action. We call on governments, institutions and all Canadians to commit to creating systems and cultures where survivors are supported, believed and able to access real justice and healing.
