YWCA Canada & Uber Announce Initiative That Helps Increase

Access to Opportunity by Removing Transportation Barriers

Through the Uber Community Impact Initiative, YWCA members will receive transportation services from Uber for rides to job interviews, medical appointments and training opportunities

TORONTO, Ontario, November 1, 2019 —  Today, YWCA Canada is pleased to announce that member associations in Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver have been selected as recipients of the Uber Community Impact Initiative (CII). Through a shared mission to help increase access to opportunity, this program will help support women and gender diverse peoples with Uber rides to help get them to and from job interviews, housing and medical appointments, and training opportunities.

“Everyday, YWCA works across Canada to advance gender equality. Our member associations are critical to this work and are an essential backbone in the communities they serve. Reducing barriers to transportation makes access to opportunity possible for the people we support. That’s why we are so glad to see the important work our YWCAs do in Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver better supported through the Uber Community Impact Initiative.” – Maya Roy, CEO, YWCA Canada

Earlier this year, Uber and YWCA Canada announced they were joining forces to help raise the awareness of gender-based violence, as well as collaboration efforts to provide resources and training to support programs and services across Canada.

“We are honoured to continue collaborating and supporting YWCA Canada’s meaningful work that strengthens communities by creating opportunities for women and gender diverse people,” said Matthew Price, General Manager, Uber Canada. “We believe transportation has the power to transform every life and should not serve as an obstacle that prevents someone from achieving their goals.”

Uber is partnering with nonprofits to support communities and help create opportunities for all. This year’s Community Impact Initiative recipients are comprised of organizations from many areas including, women’s equality, gender-based violence, that are providing access to health and job opportunities.

YWCA Canada is one of more than 70 local nonprofits receiving support through this program.
