YWCA Canada Welcomes the Return of a Dedicated Minister for Women and Gender Equality

Published on 15/05/2025 by YWCA Canada

YWCA Canada celebrates the federal government’s decision to reinstate a dedicated Minister for Women and Gender Equality in the newly announced Cabinet. This is a vital step toward renewed leadership on gender equity in Canada. We are pleased to congratulate and welcome Minister Valdez into this important role.

This appointment reflects what advocates across the country have called for: clear and sustained leadership to advance the rights and well-being of women, girls, and gender diverse people. At a time when progress on gender equality is at risk of stalling—or reversing—Minister Valdez’s presence at the Cabinet table sends a powerful message: that women’s rights and gender equality are not an afterthought, but a core priority.

Having a dedicated Minister for Women and Gender Equality is more than symbolic. This role is essential to driving progress across government, ensuring that policies and programs are informed by intersectional Gender-Based Analysis Plus (GBA+), and holding the government accountable for its commitments to gender justice. It also plays a critical role in advancing national priorities that have a profound impact on women and gender diverse people, including housing, child care, responsible gun control, and the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence.

The need for action is urgent. In 2024, 187 women and girls were killed in acts of gender-based violence—a 26 percent increase since 2018. Violence against women shelters remain full, and waitlists for affordable housing continue to grow. We know that without immediate federal leadership and investment, the epidemic of gender-based violence will only deepen. Minister Valdez’s appointment comes at a pivotal time. We urge the government to honour the commitment in the 2024 Fall Economic Statement and release $50 million to accelerate the construction and renovation of women’s shelters. Lives depend on it.

YWCA Canada also commends the government for maintaining gender parity in Cabinet. Representation matters. A Cabinet that reflects the diversity of Canada leads to better decisions, stronger communities, and more equitable outcomes.

As the country’s largest and oldest gender equity organization, YWCA Canada looks forward to working in partnership with Minister Valdez and the federal government. Together, we can build a future where all women, girls, and gender-diverse people have the safety, support, and opportunity they deserve.

We are ready to get to work.
