Gender-based violence is at crisis levels in Canada.
The Rose Campaign is YWCA Canada’s national initiative to end violence against women, girls and gender diverse people. It was created to honour the lives lost in the tragic mass femicide at École Polytechnique on December 6, 1989, and has since grown into a bold call for systemic change, justice and safety across the country.
For too long, the rose has been a symbol of mourning, laid in grief. We reclaim the rose as a symbol of resistance and bold action. Because remembrance without action is not enough. One more life lost is too many.
This ends when we all begin—one voice, one rose, one action at a time.
This ends when we all begin.
There is a gender-based violence epidemic in Canada.
Every two days, a woman or girl is killed. Every four days, that death is at the hands of a current or former intimate partner. Indigenous women, 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, women with disabilities, and women living in poverty or rural areas face higher rates of violence.
This campaign is a national movement to end gender-based violence. With it, we also remember and honour the 14 women murdered during the mass femicide at École Polytechnique on December 6, 1989, now recognized as Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
This ends when we all begin to:
Believe survivors.
Speak out against injustice.
Break the cycle.
Donate to support survivor-led solutions and support.
